Sale of liquor is one of the major source in the State government's revenue.
Intro:
Have you guys ever wondered of the selling of liquor during the lockdown period? How sale of liquor benefits the State governments? In lockdown only shops of essential goods are allowed to remain open. So is it that liqour came into an essential need? No, it is only that it is one of the major source of revenue for many state governments in India. So, are we not shameful of the economy which is totally dependent upon the revenue collected from the sale of liqour instead it of the distribution of petrol and Diesel.
Some facts and figures:
It is observed according to a study that in India as many as in 15 states at least 10% of the source of income is through a pool in State Goods and services Tax (SGST), VAT (Value Added Tax), sales tax on petrol and Diesel and other elements.
In most of the states in India the sale of liquor plays an important role for a source of Income. Some states even earn 700 crores everyday through the sale of liquor. So we can easily imagine the loss to the state governments' revenue during the lockdown period. Uptill lockdown part-2 the liquor shops remained closed which led to a loss of many thousand crores.
But now after 40 days of lockdown the governments of the states are unable to handle such a huge economic loss.
Opening of liquor shops is a necessity for State governments !
State governments allow the opening of the liqours shops on certain norms. Half of the total shops are allowed to open in some states. Delhi government also took an initiative by increasing the price of liquor by 70% of the rate of of MRP. Sale of liqour is totally monitorised to ensure the rules of social distancing. But we see in some parts of Delhi as soon as within the half an hour of opening the liqours shops a huge crowd gathered which led to reclosing of the shops in some areas.
Opening of liquor stores may worsened the situation:
In some areas due to the opening of liquor store the people break the rules of social distancing which would led in the transmission of the virus in a very large scale. It might led to the sacrifice of 135 crore people in danger. Liquor shops should remain closed if we see through the perspective of the pandemic but through the eyes of State government it should be regularised as it was before the lockdown.
It is also suggested by the Supreme Court of India that States should consider the home delivery of liqour to maintain social distancing. Although no particular order is issued for the same.
Thank you.
